The u.s had the opportunity to thrive, especially after the cold war, but instead the country decided it would focus itself on wars, and therefore continue to spend more money than it could afford. This worked itself through the economy ( greed - irresponsible loans, derivatives ( which are a total con ) etc which lead to the banking crisis didn't help ), and now the u.s finds itself in the pits.
Hey, you had the potential but you decided to throw it all away...

Not all lives are "equal". One life of an important financial worker who perished at WTC might be worth more than 1000 soldiers. That's the order of society. A soldier's life is meant to be sacrificed to protect the worker. Some "warriors" are born to be this way, like army ants. The worker is more important because he makes guns to put into the hands of new soldiers. And of course, as you may have noticed, many of the front line (infantry) consists of would be rejects of society that have been conditioned and given a chance to serve a greater purpose than to become delinquents or menial workers that they would have been. "Unimportant Lives" in the big picture despite what their own families think of them. That's the unwritten rule.
I disagree with the difference you're placing between financial workers and soldiers. For all the financial workers lost in the twin towers, others were keen to get in to the industry and take their places. Take Cantor Fitzgerald - almost wiped out by the attack (638 employees killed), it didn't take them long to rebound (http://www.time.com/time/business/article/0,8599,1891774,00.html).
I was on the phone to colleagues in 7 world trade on the day of the attack, and talked with them later about their experience (quite a few took the opportunity to 'reappraise their lives' and stepped away from the industry). They were replaced by others just as good, and our computer systems which were wiped out when the building fell were back on line in hours/days.
People are very resilient and soon bounce back from things like terrorist attacks. Useless waste, pork barrel 'homeland security' projects, 'traffic light' security levels and ongoing war create a steady wearying depression on a country - and I think the negative effect of that has been out of all proportion of the attack.

Omg with no laptop updates, I'd like to watch as Apple's laptop sales tumble. Already the Apple Store dropped their MacBook shipping days down to 3-5 days (nobody wants it).
Having visited my local Apple Store several times over the last two weeks (my PowerBook G4 was in for warranty repairs), I can safely say that I saw more MacBooks selling than any other computer... easily two MacBooks for every iMac that sold.
This is no surprise when you consider the price/performance ratio and the overall market shift toward mobile computing (not to mention back-to-school season).
If anything, I'd say it's a safe bet that Apple may be having trouble keeping up with demand.

How much RAM do you have? In my Late 2009 MBP, whenever I play in the 9400m(256 mb ram), it changes the quality to low, which is still pretty good IMO. Just more cartoony, thats all. Im guessing you will have to play on low though, but you *shouldn't* have a problem.
I've got the full 3GB that it'll recognize. I'm mostly concerned about the old video card.

The effect of terrorists to the West is enormously magnified by our reaction to them. How many Western deaths have been caused through terrorism in the last 15 years. 5000? Probably less than 200 in the last 5 years.
How many soldiers have been killed in subsequent wars? Over 7000 (http://icasualties.org/).
How many civilians have been killed in these wars? 100s of thousands.
And how much are we spending on this? What is the 'opportunity cost' of that lost cash - which could have been spent on health care/research/education?
I think we need to learn to ignore the 'short game' of small terrorist outrages and instead concentrate on the 'long game', which the West is undoubtably winning.
Terrorists represent a tiny proportion of radicals, that bubble to the surface of large populations of unhappy, poor and repressed people. Those underlying populations are changing though... all across North Africa and the Arab world people are mobilising to gain democracy, spurred on by the slow liberalising Western influence of open communication technologies and culture. This 'long game' political change is MUCH more significant than OBL's death.
Take away the unhappy cultures that breed terrorists won't completely remove risk - but it will make terrorism more the action of criminals, and less of a 'clash of cultures'. Smart Western political leadership would sell terrorist outrages as 'random acts of criminal radicals' not 'we must go to war with the axis of evil'.
All Obama has to do is decide whether he can afford to stop propping up the US military industrial complex.
It is a bit like spending a trillion dollars trying to invent an anti lighting hat (rather unsuccessfully). While totally ignoring cancer research .

I was thinking about this, but if they're doing it with the iPad 1....
Will wait until next year - I've seem some Apps already choke on the iPad 1, and the assumption is that some of these Apps will require an iPad 2 for their latest versions...

I wish people would actually read the letter before jumping on Apple's back! It clearly states: "While Apple, of course, has no general objection to proper use of the descriptive term podcast as part of a trademark for goods and services in the podcast field...."
That's how I read it too. The poll needs to be changed, right now it's like one of those Fox news polls:
Q: Are you in favour of the War in Iraq?
1. Yes, I support our troops and America! I think Bush should be President for years!
2. No, I'm a coward and I also support Saddam Hussein and Osama Bin Laden.

You bring a fresh perspective to these boards. Actually discussing an issue rather than getting worked up in a tizzy and shouting platitudes. ;)
well that's too kind! I like it here because people seem pretty well informed. Maybe Jobs' pretentious claim that Apple is "the intersection of the Liberal Arts and Technology" (http://www.time.com/time/business/article/0,8599,1976935-4,00.html#ixzz1JLMouV91) isn't too far off the mark.

Take it from a New Yorker, he's a ****ing windbag who lies about everything and I mean everything. Just do a bit of Googling.
Would you want Donald Trump as our president? I am really on the fence for this one.
What could possibly have you on the fence? Was it the birther issue? Him taking his casinos into bankruptcy 3 times? His Iraq solution to just "take all the oil"? His China solution to renegotiate? His general I'm a dumb, rich, ****ing American badass attitude? His public feuds with Rosie O'Donnell?
This is the first time I am allowed to vote so I am paying attention to politics more than ever. I mean it would be good to have a completely loaded president so he "can" spend some of his money for the economy, which Trump says he will do.
LOLz. His wealth is way over-estimated. He couldn't pay for our military for more than a week or two before going broke, if that.
We all know that all politicians are liars though. Trump has changed his mind about a lot of things such as abortion, socialism, and Obama's health care plan. A little while back Trump voted for the three previous things I said but has recently changed his mind. This makes me think he will be unstable when it comes to decisions as a president. Also I don't take him seriously. So what do you think about Trump for president?
Trump is on record having an opposite position on every issue that he has weighed in on. Pathetic.
So how can you be on the fence and not take him seriously?

In my opinion, Pages is not all that bad. It needs some tweaking and Apple has to fix some bugs. I'm sure Pages 2 will be a great app for everyone who wants to do basic wordprocessing and publishing without the limitations of TextEdit. I guess most people are disappointed with Pages because of the following two reasons:
a) Pages wasn't finished when it was released
b) Pre-MWSF rumours were talking about an MS Office replacement or killer so many people think of Pages as being a replacement for Word. But I think Pages was never intended to replace Word, it's more like iMovie vs. FCP/FCE.

Frankly Apple should just commit to Thunderbolt and put those ports right on there. There is really no need for any other port. The main reason Apple sticks with the 30pin Dock Connector is size. Thin wise. Displayport is much too thick. One of the reasons they bailed on firewire on the First Gen iPod was the size. Micro USB is probably the thinnest connector out there I would imagine, but does that allow data syncing and at speeds faster than USB 2.0 ??? I don't know. The dock connector must allow for more flexibility on Apple's part I would imagine.

I'm tossing up between Regent Street and Bluewater. BW is closer for me, but Regent St is the flagship store. The BW has a sign up already stating that it is going to close at 4pm to get ready for the launch at 6. I'm sure that will give enough time for the crowds to gather outside.
I am tempted to pop up to London and make a day of it. Being a trainee teacher I'm on half term at the moment. If the release got pushed back to November I'd have been pretty peeved.
I'll have an Incase back pack on if anyone wants to find me.

Cool redeye, thanks for the update! And it's here about the same, the heat that is. Too hot to get some sleep. So, installing the widget at 00:48 CET is the best thing to do! :D And I think it's time to get this baby out of its Beta status and make it version 1.05. After this update, you have earned your rest, for the weekend that is :p

So, earlier in the week I had an issue with my iPhone and it wasn't working. While my phone was out of commission, I was watching G4 TV and X-Play was on and they had a review of games on the iPhone. The game I saw was an RPG mixed with a Bejeweled game. You would be fighting a creature and in order to gain armor, health, and attacks you have to match items like Bejeweled. Swords, Hearts, Potions, things of that nature. I never wrote the name of the game down and I've clearly forgotten the name. Even googling G4 isnt helping at the moment so I figured I would come here and ask:
Does anyone know the name of this game from how I described it? Its driving me crazy ;)
also, sorry for the lengthiness of the post.

I think these are perfectly fine and I'm sure there will be another revision next year. The only thing that would have tilted the scales for me to hold out for the iPad2 is if it had a higher resolution screen. The cameras do nothing for me and the weight and thickness I don't think will make much of a difference when just using it around the house.
Is that what others who are still buying the 1st gen are thinking too?
Yup, pretty much. If Video conferencing is not a requirement, then iPad 1 is just as good for all practical purposes. There may be some outliers but so be it. We will catch up next year.

Be specific.
Exactly which tutorials? Post the URLs.
Exactly where did you encounter a problem in the tutorial? Post the specific command that didn't work.
I did a simple google search for razorSQL. Found this page:
http://www.razorsql.com/articles/sqlite_mac.html
I have to say, I'm skeptical of razorSQL's quality. There are two blatant errors on this fairly simple page:
1. The command is misspelled as: sqilte3
2. Control-Z in Mac OS X Terminal is not EOF, control-D is.
Control-Z means something completely different.

So a 17 year old can do it but a gigantic company with $50 billion lying there can't. Seems logical to me.
The kid didn't "do it". He is just reselling what was rejected by Apple. Apple has higher standards for the color matching, durability and such. They've rejected the units he's selling because there are problems such that the units don't meet their quality control.
Lam intends to secure the services of a lawyer to defend himself against any possible action.
There goes all his profits.
In the words of the great bard, "First, we kill all the lawyers."
