It should be possible to automatically remove these kinds of flame-war-provoking-unnecessar-comments.

Bingo - IMO, this person is a detriment to our MR community - skating just on the safer side of trolling.

What, did Apple think that Verizon customers would warmly welcome someone who shunned them for 4 years? The customer is most important, shouldn'thave signed that exclusive contract with AT&T... relly stunted their growth in the CDMA market, people move on too...

If Apple had not signed that exclusive contract with AT&T, there would be no iPhone as we know it. Nor would there be Android as we know it. AT&T was the carrier willing to cede device control to Apple, which was a real game-changer. They required exclusivity to do it.

Android fans should be thanking Apple for that partnership, because not only did it make their own OS possible, but it also gave their OS a growth opportunity while Apple was tied down with AT&T.

I love my iphone 4 and I don't plan on upgrading til 2012 but I disagree there is no need for a new iphone.

I think Apple still needs to make sure they keep up. And honestly, I would say the iphone needs a faster processor (I hear the 3GS is faster due to not having as high resolution) and better graphics/more ram and more storage (but honestly that will always be the case really, it's how computer tech runs, always needing to be faster).

Course, I've gotten a lot more into gaming on my phone ;). But I have had several apps (admittedly mostly games) that do have random freeze for a second which to me is kinda unimpressive since it is the latest phone (it's not that annoying, but just unimpressive and worrysome how it will keep up with apps when it ages if it already is experiencing some lag now).

No, I don't really have any want of new things on it (except for the excitement of what will they add now) and I'm perfectly happy with the GPS/camera (The two things i wanted improved on my 3G).

But if nothing else, Apple needs to at least put out a new iphone each year to keep up with speed and new applications that need more speed (and really even though I'm happy with the camera people expect the camera technology to improve on each phone). That's the nature of technology.

(besides, even though I don't plan on getting one I'm just plain curious what the new iphone will improve on or add. Particularly since that means it will probably something I will have to look forward to in 2012 when it's time for me to upgrade as it seems apple usually tends to include the tech, if not improved versions, they put in the older phones in the new ones).

I don't think that they should include the ipod touch. There is no android equivalent. iOS has been out longer too, they will have previous market saturation (android released october 2008 more than a year after iOS). We need to look at the growth numbers.

I like how they can track individual users (scares me).

As mentioned before, iPhone has continually been compared to Android as platform rather than manufacturer's phone to phone. If that is the way people want to play than they must comparing ALL iOS devices to all Android devices because you are now comparing OS platforms to OS platforms. One reason is that it offers developers a better metric for them when evaluating what their potential ROI will be when they release an app. When releasing an app for iOS, it is accessible by iPhones, iPods, and iPads. Kind of a no-brainer way to measure in my book.

Why not? The USA for example has only 4 million miles of roads. A car with driver + passenger + some decent equipment should be able to map say 10 miles per hour, at a cost of $50 per hour. 200 cars for a year, that's 20 million dollars. And then you have a database that you can sell, and that you can use everywhere. Then write an iPhone app that lets users make corrections, lets businesses add their locations etc. and you are ready.

As a driver in North America, rather than just the US, let's make that an extra million miles to include Canada and Mexico. Canada seems well served by most map services but Mexico is not. Most map services seem to leave out gas stations in Mexico, a rather basic need.

People who pirate movies wouldn't have bought the movie in the first place. Adding usage restrictions only hurts the customers who bought the movie. If the studios are worried people will transfer movies to their friend's iPods, then they probably have their heads in the sand regarding the swapping of DVDs.

Still, the concept of limiting consumers' rights is the issue at hand.

Prisons, therefore, have no business trying to mete out punishment by making convicts miserable. It serves no useful purpose and I believe is actually counterproductive in that it breeds resentment toward society in the heart of the prisoner. Everything we do to make the prisoner (who may be released at some point) miserable reduces the likelihood that they can successfully rejoin society.

    I wholeheartedly agree.

I just thought of this and correct me if I'm wrong ...

One of the most insidious and prevalent injuries suffered by soldiers in war is post-traumatic stress disorder. It effects their ability to relate to people and to return to a normal life when they return home. I will bet that for many, prison has the same effect. In fact, a quick search finds that to be the case.

Go here (http://aspe.hhs.gov/hsp/prison2home02/Haney.htm) to read the whole report. Excerpts From the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services ...

From Prison to Home: The Effect of Incarceration and Reentry on Children, Families, and Communities

The Psychological Impact of Incarceration: Implications for Post-Prison Adjustment

    Abstract

This paper examines the unique set of psychological changes that many prisoners are forced to undergo in order to survive the prison experience. It argues that, as a result of several trends in American corrections, the personal challenges posed and psychological harms inflicted in the course of incarceration have grown over the last several decades in the United States. The trends include increasingly harsh policies and conditions of confinement as well as the much discussed de-emphasis on rehabilitation as a goal of incarceration. As a result, the ordinary adaptive process of institutionalization or "prisonization" has become extraordinarily prolonged and intense. Among other things, these recent changes in prison life mean that prisoners in general (and some prisoners in particular) face more difficult and problematic transitions as they return to the freeworld. A range of structural and programmatic changes are required to address these issues. Among other things, social and psychological programs and resources must be made available in the immediate, short, and long-term. That is, modified prison conditions and practices as well as new programs are needed as preparation for release, during transitional periods of parole or initial reintegration, and as long-term services to insure continued successful adjustment.

We are doing our society, as well as these prisoners a grave disservice by continuing to subject them to these conditions.

You know, there is a quite horrific problem here. Now that e is a mod, he can't hijack threads, and do drive-by macro postings!

We can't have fun anymore! Didn't you just love hijacking threads, and turning them into competitions of who can put e and K into a funny pic in e's backyard?

They days of old are gone. e is still here, but his old personality is gone. No murdured. Murdured by his moderatorship. It just won't be the same anymore.

The golden days of macrumors are over. But soon... a new idol will rise up, and the people in the fields will know that this is there time. We will throw off the shackles, and bring those who were once one of us, and turned away, back to our side! WE WILL BRING EM BACK ALIVE!

    Or maybe not, who knows?

In hindsight, I think I may have been high on Vegemite when I posted this. On that note, I'm gonna go eat some Vegemite.

I'm the one who found it. It's the following file:
    System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/AOSNotification.framework/Resources/English.lprog/Localizable.strings

    Cool.

How does one basically decode these string files?
These seem to binary although they have readable text. How can we actually read all the content in those binary files?

Yes you are certainly charging way too little. My basic sites start at $500 and go up from there depending on what the client wants. Usually I charge it by the job and in some cases, there will be add on's and I usually charge $50-$75 per hour for that work. I have a few NPO's and for them I start my quotes to them at $300 for the job.

From the sounds of this guy you're dealing with, I would just move on and forget him. Finish whatever you've started and end it there.

    Hi,

Just to give a quick backstory; I spent years going back to school for design and at last I've finally acquired my degree. I now have a budding freelance business with a handful of small clients, all of whom are relatively civil, good natured and appreciative of my work.

Recently a long distance client I really get along with referred me to someone. He hired me to do a logo for his marketing startup. He was pleased with the end result and asked me to take on a second project, designing a mockup for a website that he could then turn over to a developer. He set a time limit of 3 hours, because that's all he could afford. Everything was going fine till about 2 hours in. He liked the direction I was going in, so while I was waiting to hear back I did some small revisions (off the clock), just to satisfy my own design sensibilities. I sent them to him to see what he thought. He suddenly calls me saturday afternoon and from the get go, seems to have an attitude. He wants to go over all the revisions I sent him. So I scramble for my macbook. As I'm going through my folders in search of the files he starts getting flustered and belittling. I offer to call him back in an hour after I've gathered everything and before one of us says something we'll regret, but he wants to stay on the phone and takes an even more offensive tone. I'm a laid back guy, but I had enough and firmly reminded him that I was trying to design a site for him within a 3 hour limit and had been good enough to not bill him for all the phone time he insisted on and had even stopped the clock a couple of times. He then startled to backpedal and complimented me on my work and how fair my pricing was ($25.00 an hour). The conversation went on for about another half hour as in the aftermath we awkwardly discussed the project. I think I did a pretty good job of remaining diplomatic. I've now just about completed the project and now he's talking about having me design a business card:rolleyes: The whole thing has left a bad taste in my mouth. I know there can always be an element of stress with any type of work is, but that was a bit much.

Sorry for the rant, but I felt like I needed to vent to fellow designers. Anyone else have any horror stories?:)
