Ash gives IIFA a miss this year

They are no longer part of the IIFA event. Though the Bollywood’s smashing jodi Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai has given some outstanding and memorable dance performances on IIFA stage, they are not going to perform at the award function in Toronto this year. So, that entire buzz that Aishwarya will be at IIFA is nothing but hogwash.

Recently a Toronto magazine allegedly used Aishwarya Rai’s name in an IIFA related story. The magazine Toronto Life had Aishwarya’s photograph on the cover which said “Toronto is hosting the Bollywood’s Oscar with celebs like Aishwarya Rai.”

Abhishek Bachchan, much aware of the all the IIFA hype and hoopla, decided to clear the air. Bachchan Junior tweets, “Just to clarify….Neither Aishwarya nor I will be performing or attending IIFA Toronto, classic case of jumping the gun!”

However, it was recently said that though Amitabh Bachchan, the former IIFA ambassador, has dissociated himself from the awards, beta Abhishek and bahu Aishwarya will perform at the award function to be held at Toronto.

But now it seems that IIFA and the Bachchans, once almost synonymous, won’t go along for at least a few years.

The Hero in "Heroine"

Till now Arunoday Singh has done only small films, but he got noticed in every one of them. So, it didn’t come as a surprise for us to know that he is the hunk who will romance Bollywood diva Aishwarya Rai in the much-hyped movie Heroine.

With this confirmation, the speculations have come to an end. Aishwarya gets her hero, and it’s not Abhishek Bachchan as many had expected. Apart from Arunoday Singh, Arjun Rampal is also a part of the film which will be directed by Madhur Bhandrakar.

So, what worked in Arunoday’s favour? He is good-looking, tall and incredibly handsome, someone who can match up with Aishwarya’s pristine beauty.

As per sources, Arunoday was confirmed after much deliberation. According to a source, “Madhur wanted to finish the casting of his film Heroine since the film was announced at Cannes sometime back. However, after much thought, Arunoday Singh has been roped in for the film…”

While talking to a daily, Arunoday himself confirmed the news and said that he is excited about the film and about working with Aishwarya, but can’t disclose much about the project. Sources further claim that Arunoday will play a cricketer who has an affair with a top actress.

"I'm ready to quit!" says Aishwarya

Name, fame and success always go with some problems. Naturally, they become the center of attraction for the gossip columnists and celebrities always fall prey for such gossip mongers.

The victim on this news is the renowned Aishwarya Rai Bachchan who goes through unceasing problems being a part of some rumor or the other almost all the time.

Recently, one of the Hindi entertainment channels had aired the news "Aishwarya is all set to go bare for a film project."

Blown out in extreme shock, Aishwarya slammed down the channel saying "I hail from a well reputed family and shall not spoil the value of my in-laws. If this is the situation, I am ready to quit films. I am really shocked to hear such stories and I beg them to stop dishonoring me and my family.”

Aishwarya talks about being at Cannes

Actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s red carpet appearance at the Cannes this year is a rather special affair for the Bollywood beauty, as it marks a decade of her attending the international film festival. But call her a Cannes veteran, and she laughs it off! “I have a lot of decades to go before you can call me that,” she’d joked earlier. And those close to the star admit that Ash’s obviously excited and is looking forward to catching up on some good pals including fellow endorser Hollywood’s Eva Longoria, with whom she’d walked the red carpet in the past.

At the time of going to press, the actor was expected to kickstart her evening yesterday by attending Woody Allen’s romantic comedy Midnight in Paris, which is also the opening film at the festival. Post which she was expected to be hobnobbing with several international stars including the renowned filmmaker at the highlight of the day, the opening Gala cocktail, which is also one of the main attractions of the festival, followed by the dinner party to host Woody’s film. Today, the actor will be announcing her film Heroine with Madhur Bhandarkar, before she takes to the red carpet again with Longoria for the big party hosted by her brand later in the evening.

Apparently, the actor has turned down several dinner invitations later in the festival to return home. The source adds, “Aishwarya’s not much into partying and networking for work there. She is going to be sticking to her professional commitments and will be flying out soon after. It’s going to be a hectic two-day affair for her, as there’s always a keen interest in her work.” All eyes will be riveted on what Aishwarya decides to wear on the red carpet this year around as well. “She’s been getting better every year,” points out an industry observer.

Aishwarya in Madhur's "Heroine"

Madhur Bhandarkar didn’t let his dream wash away. His ambitious project "Heroine" will roll soon and that too with Aishwarya Rai in lead. Now, the director can’t stop counting his blessings.

Finally "Heroine" gets its actress. This much-awaited project was riding high on buzz courtesy Kareena Kapoor. Bebo first said yes to the film and later said no. The speculations were rife that the story of "Heroine" resembles her real love story with Saif Ali Khan and also her character required to do steamy scenes in the film, something that was not acceptable to the actress.

After Kareena walked out from the film, Madhur approached Aishwarya with the script. But Ash too had apprehensions about it. So, Madhur decided to work again on his script. The director confesses that he has now ‘structured’ the script keeping Ash in mind.

Madhur regrets not having Kareena, his original choice, in the film but has now moved on. The director reveals, “I feel it is jinxed for me to think of Kareena doing any of my films, as due to some or the other reason, it never materialises.” Kareena was also his first choice for Page 3 and Fashion.

The announcement of "Heroine" will be made in Cannes, says Aishwarya Rai, who will start shooting for it next month. The film will be shot in a single, two-month long shooting schedule.

Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan joins Twitter

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has so far doggedly kept away from social networking. But on her fourth wedding anniversary on Wednesday, hubby Abhishek Bachchan persuaded her to come on Twitter.

However, Aishwarya did not open her own page on Twitter but rather chatted with the fans through Abhishek’s handle.

“Thank you all for the wonderful anniversary wishes. Will get Aishwarya to chat with you'll this evening. Much love again... Ok guys, here she is..... Shoot away” Abhishek wrote on Twitter.

“Hello everyone, :) :) and thank you all so much for all ur love and wishes "4" us on our special day. Truly overwhelmed. Love Aishwarya,” Ash wrote in her first Tweet.

Instantly, Ash was showered with congratulatory messages from friends and fans. From then on, Ash was busy ‘thanking’ the fans.

We wish for the day when Ash would have her own Twitter handle.

Ash, Sonam and Freida at the Cannes this year

She debuts at the film festival; but won't sashay down the red carpet on the same day as the Bachchan Bahu

The last time Sonam Kapoor was slated to walk on the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival, it mysteriously didn't materialise. It was reported that the regular-at-the-fest Aishwarya Rai Bachchan had demanded that the younger actress be left out, or she wouldn't attend. This year the Aisha girl is finally fulfilling her catwalk dream. This is the first time that Sonam will be at the French Riviera. However, she will not be walking alongside Ash. Both actress endorse the global face of a cosmetic brand, that gives them the opportunity to hobnob with top actors and filmmakers of the world at the film festival, that is less about cinema and more about glamour.

Aishwarya will be at the opening ceremony of Cannes on May 11, as well as the opening gala cocktail and dinner while attending various events on May 12. This the tenth consecutive time that she is walking the red carpet at the French Riviera. The ex-Ms World sent out a press statement through her publicist saying, "I'm glad India is finally getting the same recognition (as the West). I am happy that with Sonam and Freida (Pinto), both beautiful women, are invited to the festival this year, India will have a stronger presence, which is a clear sign of the growing importance of the country."

Sonam will walk the red carpet on May 15. She said, "It has always been my dream to walk the red carpet at Cannes and it is soon going to be a reality. I look forward to meeting actors and film makers from the world over and attending screenings of some interesting films." Chances are that Sonam's dad Anil Kapoor who is one of the best known Indian faces in Hollywood after Slumdog Millionaire and the television series 24, may also one of the big Indian draws at the red carpet in Cannes.

Freida will be present at the amFAR (The American Foundation for AIDS Research) dinner and after-party on May 19.

Another Musical with A R Rahman - Ghai

Most of the Subash Ghai’s films have been musical hits and his combination with A.R. Rahman in ‘Taal’ was a tremendous success while ‘Yuvvraj’ was lauded for its musical grandness. It looks like the duo will come together again, this time for a musical animation film. Recently Subash Ghai collaborated with Ketan Mehta’s Maya Digital to make 3D and animation flicks.

With Subash Ghai close on the heels of completing the script work and other preproduction works, the filmmaker is keen about signing A.R. Rahman as music plays a vital role in the film.

Right now Subash Ghai and Ketan Mehta are planning to recreate Sholay in 3D and have already completed the test shoot.

"Rani is the best co-star" says Abhishek..

Abhishek Bachchan is eagerly looking forward for his film Dum Maaro Dum to hit screens.

Talking about the film in a recent interview, Abhishek said that he wants to change audiences' perception about him being a non-actor with the film. Abhishek's last release Raavan, Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Se and Game have been box office disasters and he wishes to set cash registers ringing with Dum Maaro Dum.

The actor also candidly talked about how favourite co-stars. He said, "Rani is the best co-star I have ever worked with. She's beautiful and is a brilliant actor." When asked if he would like to work with her again, Abhi promptly replied, "Of course, I would love to work with her."

It can be recalled that Abhishek and Rani, who have worked in films like Yuva, Bunty Aur Babli, Laga Chunri Mein Daag and Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna, had been linked up with each other before Abhi-Ash's marriage. There were also rumours that the two are planning to tie the knot. Though audience felt that Jr. Bachchan and the bong beauty made an awesome couple, the two refrained from working together.

However, now with Abhishek's confession, we look forward to seeing Bunty and Babli light up the screen again with their amazing chemistry.

Aishwarya's Hollywood Manager calls it quit

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan's international manager Simone Sheffield has parted ways after over a decade.

Sheffield did not cite any reason for the split but announced that she was terminating their business relationship. "I introduced her to the international market and wish her well and our time together, business wise, was as productive as possible," said Sheffield.

Sheffield said that over the 10 years that she handled Aishwarya's career in the US, the former Miss World has gone on to secure a lucrative promotional deal with L'Oreal cosmetics; appeared on '60 Minutes' and 'The Oprah Winfrey Show' twice; and made to the cover of Time magazine, as well as being listed among their 100 most influential people in entertainment.

Aishwarya, 37, attended her first Academy Awards ceremony here last month via an invitation through Sheffield's contacts.

Hrithik dying to work with Sonakshi

Superstar Hrithik Roshan and newcomer Sonakshi Sinha have formed the Bollywood's latest alliance, not for a movie though but for an endorsement.

It was hard to be ignored when Hrithik and Sonakshi recently come together to endorse a clothing brand. They appeared to be the members of a mutual admiration society. While on the filmy front Hrithik appeared to be dying to work with Sonakshi, the latter seemed to be his die hard fan.

On their first assignment together Hrithik said, "I am happy she is the new face. We have lived in the same neighbourhood and known each other, I think she is great and has a great future ahead of her. I am dying to work with her."

"He is the counterpart and sharing the space with him is amazing," said Sonakshi. Unlike her Dabangg co-star Salman Khan, she was all praise for Hrithik's last release Guzaarish.

"I cried while watching Guzaarish. In fact I even spoke to Mr Bhansali also after that," said Sonakshi expressing her desire to work with Hrithik, "I definitely am looking forward to work with him. It has started on a great note and hopefully we will see more. It would be my privilege. I am too small a person to comment on him. He is one of my most favourite actors. How much ever I talk about him is less."

Asked about the talks of a cat fight between her and Katrina Kaif, Sonakshi said: "A lot has been talked about it. I think, aapas ki baat hai, hum aapas mein hi sort out karenge (it is between us, we will sort it out ourselves).

Kat fight coz of Sallu Miya

The tinsel town's catfight has reached to its latest babe Sonakshi Sinha. It's learnt that Katrina Kaif hates Sonakshi stealing the limelight in the industry. Apparently, Kat doesn't like losing to the new girl, who is replacing her brand after brand. The reality, however, is that Salman's name is being linked to Sonakshi. When Kat's relationship with Sallu was in the docks, story took the rounds that Sallu has taken to Sonakshi, something Kat certainly cannot swallow.

Incidentally, Salman's friendship is one to look out for. The actor is known to be a great friend but if miffed he can be the worst enemy. So should we be worried over his proximity with actress Kangana Ranaut? Apparently, the actor rushed through a promotional shoot for 'Ready' at Mehboob Studios recently to spend time with Kangna. A source said that he was taking his own sweet time during the photoshoot with Asin, but when a unit hand informed him that Kangana was around, he asked the crew to wrap up the shoot soon so as to meet her. The source further added that he is extremely fond of her. Kangana too was excited about having him around. Besides, Sallu had surprised everyone by landing up at Kangana's birthday bash at 4 in the morning recently.

Rajkumar Santoshi to direct Abhi-Ash

Mr and Mrs Bachchan will soon be back together in reel life with Rajkumar Santoshi’s romantic comedy, Ladies & Gentlemen, which flags off in July. Aishwarya says, “I met Rajji a week ago and he told me that before I start giving my dates to other producers, he wanted to lock a chunk for his film. Abhishek and I are his dream pair, he’s always wanted us for this film.”

She admits to having immensely liked this script, which she had heard years ago. Ladies & Gentlemen will be the star couple’s ninth film together. Their last film together was Mani Ratnam’s Raavan, which didn’t quite set the cash registers ringing.

So, why did she back out of it before, prompting her husband to suggest that they were not a “couple package” but “two independent actors who didn’t play any role in getting each other cast”? She reasons that she didn’t have the dates earlier since Guzaarish demanded two-three months of single-minded focus. “But the movie got delayed and with Abhishek and Rajji on board, I’m happy to be back,” she says. “As far as this script is concerned, it was always a yes.”

Since their marriage, the duo has been wary of over- exposing brand Bachchan, insisting that they’d work together only when a film would offer them something new and exciting. Earlier, Aishwarya had opted out of Dostana, Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Se and Game. More recently, she reportedly refused a Vipul Shah film opposite her husband, suggesting he cast Katrina Kaif instead.

She says that the last three years have been hectic. In 2008, she had Jodhaa Akbar and Sarkar Raj. In 2009, she was juggling between the English film, The Pink Panther 2, Raavan and the Tamil film, Raavanan. Last year there was Robot, Action Replayy and Guzaarish.

“I took a small break after The Pink Pather 2 but then the last couple of years have been really busy. We actors enjoy our work so much that there are times when we commit to projects without realising that we’ve locked away a lot of ‘own’ time,” she says. “I’ve tried to approach work differently but haven’t always succeeded. This break was necessary.”

She spent time with Abhishek in New Zealand where he was filming Players and then flew off to Los Angeles for a much-needed vacation that turned out to be eventful when they were invited to the Oscars. Now she’s raring to return to the sets. Ladies & Gentlemen will be shot across Mumbai, Rome, New York and Malaysia. “It’s wonderful to be doing another movie with Abhishek. We had a great time during Raavan even though I had to work really hard on both Raavan and Raavanan, which were critically acclaimed.”

Priyanka-Shahid join the endorsements' band wagon

The coming together of Bollywood’s now-on-now-off couple — Priyanka Chopra and Shahid Kapoor — for the latest Bru coffee campaign, made headlines even before it went on air recently. The constant speculation over their relationship too, ensured a large number of hits for the ad on the internet. And bingo, the product got the massive attention the ad was seeking. Before their split (hopefully, not a permanent one), the star couple established their combined market power.

“Bollywood’s famous couples give instant noticeability to an ad — provided the script is interesting and it is made well. They also generate a lot of buzz and PR about the ad,” says Rajiv Rao, ECD, O&M, South Asia, whose agency has worked on the Bru campaign. But that’s not the case with Chopra and Kapoor alone. Bollywood couples Saif Ali Khan-Kareena Kapoor and Abhishek Bachchan-Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan have been on the forefront when it comes to exploiting their market appeal.

The foray of celebrity couples into advertising can be seen as the way forward in Indian ad industry. “We do not have a supermodel culture in India, like in the West. Hence, we often go for Bollywood actors and their spouses, whom we refer to as ‘glorified models’,” says Sameer Makhani, CEO, Makhani Advertising who has done the Metro Shoes Campaign. “So, when you know of a star dating another popular one, you just go for the obvious choice to attract more eyeballs,” says Makhani.

The draw for several brands lies in the recall value that the celebrity couples add to the product. “In

India, Bollywood is still one of the major influences on fashion,” says Lavina Rodrigues Pinto, marketing manager, Metro Shoes Limited.

Notwithstanding the marketing concerns, it becomes easier to narrate a story when star couples are involved. Saif and Kareena made their relationship public through a series of Airtel ads. What further consolidated their relationship in public memory was the Metro Shoes campaign. The young Bachchan couple too have publicly displayed their affection in the Lux commercial. Shah Rukh Khan and his rarely-seen-wife Gauri followed suit in the D’Decor campaign.

The trend of real-life couples doubling up as models in commercials, however, is not very new. In the past, Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi and Sharmila Tagore, and Salman Khan with his then-girlfriend Sangeeta Bijlani have appeared in commercials for suits and shirts. Jaya and Amitabh Bachchan have made a rare television appearance for an eye donation campaign. Even though the romance between Aishwarya Rai and Vivek Oberoi was short-lived, they did find time to shoot a Coke ad together.

In the recent years, the reticent duo Kajol and Ajay Devgn too showcased their wedding bliss in ad campaigns for Whirlpool and Tata Indicom, and John Abraham and Bipasha Basu’s sensuous moves for a shampoo ad have been much appreciated. “The celebrity couple add to the credibility factor. They look more convincing being together in the ad, thanks to the level of comfort they share. This gives more scope for experimenting,” says Rao.

Despite the benefits of featuring celebrity couples in commercials, it has not been exploited enough in the past. Reason: “Not many couples were open about their relationships earlier,” says Rituparna Das, a client service executive. “Now, ads have become a great PR excercise for the celebrities whose relationships are constantly in the public spotlight.”

The nature of a couple’s relationship — or the public perception of it — often decides the kind of campaigns they bag. Ajay Arora, managing director of D’Decor, says “Shah Rukh and Gauri are the best examples of perfect homemakers. Apart from their star status, they have made a wonderful home,” he says.

The economics of ads varies according to the value of stars involved and their exclusivity. According to industry insiders, Saif and Kareena pocketed Rs 6 crore for their Airtel campaign while Shah Rukh and Gauri earned Rs 10 crore from their D’Decor appearance. Often, couples lower their individual asking rates for the total package. But it can’t be seen as a general rule.

However, despite the instant attention that comes with a star couple’s endorsement, there lies a potential risk. “The brand depends on the relationship status of the celebrity couple,” says Rao. Should we sense a regret in his statement, now that Shahid and Priyanka are not likely to have coffee together?

Ash or Mallika at the Oscars ??

The 83rd Annual Academy Awards had quite an Indian presence – Abhishek and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, AR Rahman with wife Saira, Mallika Sherawat, (why was she there, by the way?) and even Ashutosh Gowarikar .

Ash, whose international Red Carpet appearances have become something of a habit now, was here too – with hubby Abhi in tow. And we thought, it's yet another Aishwarya-on-an-international-Red-Carpet moment... yawn.

However, much to our surprise and relief, Aishwarya, who has displayed an uncanny knack of making the absurd-est of fashion choices when she's on foreignshores, didn't look too bad after years of being panned for her Red Carpet sartorial sense. And so we decided to ask our desi experts what they thought of her this time in her charming rust-amber sequined Giorgio Armani Prive gown. As for Mallika, who had earlier posted online that "Maybe I'll wear veggies!" thankfully opted for a sparkling white gown instead, something Nicole Kidman apparently admired. For, Mallika posted online, "Lovin being here! Nicole Kidman is so sweet said I looked stunning".

But designers here don't seem to share the same sentiments as Nicole. Manav Gangwani gives Mallika a 2.5 on a scale of 10. "I don't know what she was thinking when she wore that outfit – which, by the way, is quite nice – with black shoes and black painted toenails. And she has French manicure on her hands. Sometimes, a single element can ruin the entire look. She could have carried it off better." Rina Dhaka is more generous as she gives Mallika a score of 7. "I quite like the dress, but the jewellery is all wrong for the outfit," says Rina.

Ash has scored better, well, some would say, she's had years of practice! "I give her an 8," says Rina, "She looks beautiful, and her outfit is right, but I have always liked her better in those sleeveless dresses with a deep V-neck. When she wears these dresses, the focus shift to her arms – not really what she should flaunt," says Rina. Manav thinks "Ash looks stunning. I would give her an 8.5. I love the way she's done up her eyes, she looks glamorous."
